Jewel City...

Jewel City was once an industrial area for diamond and gold trade. Now, it has become a residential and commercial precinct. This massive urban redevelopment project is on the outskirts of the Maboneng Precinct in the East of Joburg and has been dubbed the “HEART” of the CBD.

The newly renovated design of the Jewel city apartments has been given an urban chic look to the area, with graffiti African art decorating the exterior.

Previously the area was a walled-off centre of trade of precious metals, but the new look has really given the area a new breath of life.

There are restaurants, kids play areas and an open area to setup for picnics, so really a place to be enjoyed by all.

The complex consists of six city blocks of industrial buildings, some dating back to the 1930s. The entire area was closed off to the public in the mid-90s and remained an isolated and forgotten node for decades until now.

The place hasn't definitely no lost any of its historic appeal with all building being named after a precious metal or stone ie. Onyx or Emerald.

The buildings offer the most striking views of Johannesburg.
