Poetry or Music...

We caught up with Kgafela le Marabele a local band that is changing the face of music. We were astounded by their uniquie musical talent. It is a genre-defying music collaboration, where the spoken word is used to define their musical style. Indigenous instrumentation and traditional storytelling (Griot / Mooki tradition) are fused with jazz / world music.

The band is led by Kgafelaoa Magogodi a local poet, writer, storyteller, musician, and teacher.

Thulani Shabangu produces and plays the guitar, Bafana Ndhlovu upright and double bass, Sibusiso Mkhize provides backing vocals and plays piano. Tebogo Tsotetsi, Ohentse Motlhanke and Gugu Ngwenya play percussion including the Marabele drum, serankure, setolotolo, djembe and talking drums to name a few.

The band has collaborated with artists including Mabeleng Moholo, Lefifi Tladi and Velaphi 'Blues' Mabaso. Marabele is a genre defying ensemble drawing from centuries old African musical traditions, jazz and spoken word.
